This year the children of 4th class have been undertaking a cycle training course conducted by the cycle safety school. This is a 6 week course which includes 4 practical sessions and 2 theory sessions.

The course was delivered to the children by Noel and Derry. The children also had the opportunity to have maintenance carried out on their bicycles if they needed it. Noel was able to fix and tighten up brakes and handle bars, making the children’s bicycles safer. This also helped the children to become more aware of how to maintain and check that their bike is safe to use. The children have learned how to take a left turn, right turn, avoid hazards and make an emergency stop. Synchronized cycling was also part of the course which taught the children how to cycle in groups. The lifesaver look has been an important part of the course for children and emphasises the importance of that final look over the shoulder before moving out to avoid a hazard or taking a turn. As Noel emphasized when you are a cyclist you never trust other road users and especially people in cars. As Noel explained to the children we can do the right things as cyclists but we have no control over what other road users do. So remember when it comes to cycling think about Safety and cycle safely!
