Sam Maguire and James Mc Carthy visit Scoil San Treasa
The Sam Maguire is a famous Cup in Ireland for the ‘All Ireland Gaelic Football’ final. It is awarded to the team that wins and it also means that they are the best in Ireland at Gaelic football.
This year Dublin won the All Ireland final against Kerry. Today one of the Dublin players came to our school, Scoil san Treasa. His name is James McCarthy. He is an important player for Dublin and in 2011 he was nominated for GPA young player of the year. James McCarthy plays for the Ballymun Kickhams club. He plays midfield for his club but on the Dublin team he plays right wing back. The Sam is the nickname of the Sam Maguire. The Sam Maguire cup is named after a man from Cork called Sam Maguire. He moved to England and he was a very influential man in a club in England called London Hibernians. It was one of the first GAA clubs in England. Sam Maguire also helped in the setting up of London GAA who plays in our Connacht Championship every year. The Sam Maguire legacy will live forever in Gaelic Football. Someday I hope that I can play in Croke Park. Next year I’ll try my best to make our school senior team.
