Guest Speaker

Many thanks to all who supported the Guest Speaker evening last Thursday.  We had a high attendance and Prof Aidan Moran’s presentation was superb and very well received by all.

Thanks again to Aidan for his time and to note that Aidan has kindly donated his fee of €500 to Carmona Services.

Thursday 2nd  February – Aidan Moran

Focusing for Success: Concentration and Effective Learning

“Have you ever had the experience of suddenly discovering that you’ve been reading the same sentence in a book over and over again without any comprehension because your mind was “miles away”? If so, then you have first-hand experience of losing your concentration. But what exactly is ‘concentration’, why do we lose it so easily and how is it related to effective learning? In this lecture, I shall explain what concentration is and why we lose it, explore some useful concentration techniques, and provide practical tips for your children on how to focus effectively while studying”

Aidan Moran is Professor of Cognitive Psychology and Director of the Psychology Research Laboratory in University College Dublin. A Fulbright Scholar, his research team investigates mental/motor imagery, attention (eye-tracking) and the cognitive processes underlying expertise in skilled performance (in sport, learning and surgery).

Aidan has published extensively on these topics in top international journals in psychology, neuroscience, medicine and sport science. He has written 16 books, the most recent of which (co-authored with John Toner) is A Critical Introduction to Sport Psychology, 3rd ed, Routledge, 2017). He has also written a best-selling book on learning (Managing Your Own Learning at University: A Practical Guide, UCD Press) and released a number of e-books (e.g., Learn to Study; Mindcool Productions).

A former psychologist to the Irish Olympic Squad, he has advised many of Ireland’s leading professional athletes and teams (e.g., the Irish rugby team) and is a regular broadcaster in psychology on radio and television
