We are are busy working on our school’s version of a proclamation which will reflect our vision for a modern Ireland – ‘Proclamation for a New Generation’.

Recently the Defence Forces visited our school and presented us with a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and the Irish flag.

They told us some important information and facts about the flag and the proclamation. They told us that the flag of Ireland was made in the year 1848. They told us that when the ‘sun is up the flag is up… when the sun is down the flag is down’. Also the flag is meant to fly higher than any other flag alongside it.

In 1916 Tomas J. Clark, Sean Mac Diarmada, Tomas MacDonagh, P.H Pearse, Eamonn Ceannt, James Connolly and Joseph Plunkett signed a proclamation. This was a document created by the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising which began on 24th of April 1916. It stated that Ireland would be independent from the United Kingdom. Patrick Pearse read the proclamation on the steps of the GPO.
