Many schools around the country commemorated the 1916 rising in lots of different ways.
This is how we commemorated it in Scoil San Treasa.
In Scoil San Treasa, everybody gathered in the yard at the front of the school to watch and take part in the ceremony.
Two pupils from each year read out different sentences from the ‘Scoil San Treasa Proclamation’. All of the classes had written their own proclamations and then some boys and girls from 6th class summarised the main points from them all and wrote the Scoil San Treasa Proclamation.
Then two pupils from 6th class raised the flag and then everyone sang ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ with pride and joy. In the same way, in 1916 Padraig Pearse read the Irish Proclamation outside of the GPO aloud to everyone passing. The proclamation was also published in The Irish Times so that many people could see and read it. There were many people involved in the 1916 Rising – such as Padraig Pearse and James Connolly.
