Our school orchestra started in 2010 with 18 children. Numbers have grown substantially over the years and we now have over 50 children participating.
WHEN IT'S ON:
The Orchestra is run voluntarily by parents and is open to children from 1st class to 6th class. Practices are at 8.10am on Wednesday mornings.
WHAT MUSIC DO WE PLAY?
We play a variety of pieces ranging across classical, Irish traditional, jazz, popular and church music. We collaborate with the school choir for Communion and Confirmation Masses. We also have some fun sessions where children can try different instruments.
HAVEN'T STARTED PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT YET?
Many children who join the orchestra are already attending music lessons outside of school. That said, not playing an instrument is not a barrier to joining. Some children start with recorder which they learn in class and some children start with percussion instruments but tend to want to move on to a different instrument after a while.
INSTRUMENT LOAN SCHEME:
We have a limited number of instruments (mainly string) available on short term loans if a child wants to try out an instrument before committing to buying one. We can also recommend local music schools or teachers who will call to your house to give lessons.
INSTRUMENTS INCLUDED:
We currently have children playing a wide variety of instruments including violins, violas, cellos, double bass, harps, recorders, flutes, clarinets, classical guitars, ukuleles, glockenspiels and percussion instruments.
OUR EVENTS:
The Orchestra plays at school and community events, such as the Friendship Christmas Concert, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and our Annual Summer Concert at the end of the year.
