On May 1st the pupils from 4th class went on a Science field trip to UCD. They went on a tour of the Science facilities and got to see some very impressive lab machinery, lecture halls, a replica satellite, a garden designed to demonstrate the process of evolution and the magnificent staircase modelled on the structure of DNA.

In the Physics Department they explored magnets and found out about how they are used in compasses and in medicine.  They then went on to look at electric circuits and even got the chance to build their own “Brush Bots” and compete in “Robot Wars”!

In the Chemistry Lab they became real scientists as they donned lab coats and safety glasses and practised their science skills of questioning, observing, predicting, investigating and experimenting while trying to discover what the mystery white substance in front of them was. They also examined the make-up of different substances and made their own models of the H2O molecule.

They observed Professor Guiry as he demonstrated the effects of liquid Nitrogen by “frying” (actually freezing!) an egg and shrinking a balloon!
